ABSTRACT
Since its inception in the 1980s, the field of tissue engineering has undergone, and is still experiencing, tremendous growth, in terms of knowledge, interest, and applications. In order to understand the influences that have facilitated the rapid emergence of this field, it is perhaps helpful to trace its evolution in the context of long-term historical developments.
