ABSTRACT

Over the last several years there has been growing interest in producing bioenergy from many biomass feedstocks, including dry grind ethanol coproducts. In fact, many have asked about the possibility of “burning” distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS). More speci„cally, Morey et al. (2006, 2009) proposed that ethanol plant ef„ciencies and energy balances could be improved if the coproducts (or at least a portion thereof) are used for heat and/or electricity generation at the plants themselves. This could be achieved with a variety of thermochemical conversion technologies. This chapter will briey discuss these topics. Although not intended to be a comprehensive review of thermochemical processing, it is intended to provide only a very basic introduction to the major concepts.
