ABSTRACT

Thrombosis can cause occlusion of either the venous or arterial circulation and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in various diseases. Typically, hemostasis carefully balances pro-and antithrombotic factors in the vasculature, while thrombosis reflects a pathological imbalance that favors prothrombotic factors. Advances in understanding the mechanisms of platelet-dependent thrombosis, as well as discovery of new targets, have led to the development of novel classes of antithrombotic drugs.
