ABSTRACT

I. The Need for New Treatments for Asthma and COPD Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are diseases in need of new therapies, particularly in the area of anti-inflammatory treatments. The reasons for this will be expounded in this section. There may be different emphasis for either condition, but as the history of the last 20 years has borne out, the development of new drugs for both conditions has evolved in a similar pathway although the primary therapeutic endpoints for these two airway conditions may be considered different. However, while so far the existing therapies for these two conditions are similar and have a broadspectrum effect, there are bound to be specific therapies emerging for either condition.
