Status epilepticus (SE) is dened as a seizure lasting 30 minutes or more of either continuous seizure activity or two or more sequential seizures with persistent altered awareness in between.9 It is a life-threatening medical emergency requiring prompt recognition and treatment, starting with the basic principles of neuroresuscitationthe A, B, Cs-followed by a planned treatment protocol. SE is not a specic disease itself and may occur during the course of epilepsy or secondary to a central nervous system (CNS) insult. Proper management requires the identication and treatment of the precipitating cause in order to facilitate seizure control and prevent ongoing neurologic injury.
