ABSTRACT

On all turfgrass soils, especially on recreational sites that receive intense trafc, good soil physical properties are essential (Carrow, 1989, 1991, 1992b). But, when a high salt load and excess Na have accumulated in the soil, good physical conditions are absolutely critical for long-term turfgrass sustainability. Sodic and saline-sodic soils are the most challenging stresses because Na becomes an active agent that degrades soil structure, as noted in Chapter 3, “Sodic, SalineSodic, and Alkaline Soils”; while for saline soils that have high salt loads, there must be physical conditions (pore-space continuity) that allow rapid leaching of these salts to avoid physiological drought stress.
