ABSTRACT

Drainage is critical on salt-affected soils, whether in humid, semiarid, or arid climates, or in climates with wet and dry seasons-drainage becomes more than control of excess water, but also includes control of excess salts and Na. An intensive coverage of drainage is beyond the scope of this book, but our discussion will reveal the most important best management practice (BMP) considerations related to saline and sodic soil sites. On saline and sodic soils, the primary goals for surface and subsurface drainage differ from those for non-salt-affected soils. Primary goals on saline and sodic soils for drainage entail the following:

1. Control surface and subsurface water and salt ¢ow to avoid soil salt accumulation areas on the turfgrass site. This would include interception of lateral salt movement on the surface or subsurface.
