ABSTRACT

Over the last 20 years, there have been numerous reviews of Cd toxicity.1-3·17•18 The major focus of most of these reviews was not neurotoxicity, because other toxic effects are more frequent in humans. Acute toxicity in humans is primarily respiratory and gastrointestinal, while chronic toxicity is primarily renal. 3·17•18 Since the focus of this chapter is the neurological effects of cadmium, the reader is referred to the above reviews for information on toxicities other than neurotoxicity. This chapter discusses factors that influence the availability of Cd to the nervous system and how Cd interacts with components of the nervous system, and then reviews the neurological effects of Cd in humans and animals with an emphasis on more recent findings.
