Although Excel has a number of built-in functions, the reality is that its ability to perform computations of any degree of sophistication internally is somewhat limited. There are many possible solutions to Excel’s limitations. Custom functionality can be written by the user utilizing the VBA macro programming language. Custom software libraries or Excel Add-Ins can be purchased that will perform the desired operations within Excel. The last and most flexible option is to harness the engine of another computational tool the user is intimate with and have it return its computations to Excel. In this section the reader will be shown how to utilize the computational power of Matlab and Origin from within the Excel environment. The techniques employed here could be modified and used with other computational tools such as SAS, Mathematica, JMP, or any other tool that accepts COM, OLE, ActiveX, or DDE Commands.
