ABSTRACT

As our understanding of asthma and allergic diseases evolves, so does the apparent complexity of these conditions and their pathogenesis. Allergic in£ammation arises from inappropriate IgE-mediated immune responses to environmental allergens and typically develops in organs exposed to the environment (gut, respiratory tract, and skin). The resulting clinical manifestations probably represent heterogeneous conditions with varied genetic and environmental etiological in£uences. This has made the identi¢cation of causal factors more problematic.
