ABSTRACT

Introduction Viral hepatitis is a worldwide health problem caused by several distinct DNA and RNA viruses, with the incidence of disease varying signi cantly among di erent populations (Fig. 24.1). is condition is most commonly caused by one of three viruses: hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), or hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis D (HDV) and hepatitis E (HEV) occur less frequently and, to date, are not associated with any speci c cutaneous ndings. Hepatitis G virus (HGV) has been discovered more recently, but its role in hepatitis is not well established [1]. Other viruses are known to cause hepatitis. is chapter provides a brief introduction to hepatitis A, D, E, and G viruses before detailed discussion of HBV and HCV, since the predominant cutaneous manifestations occur in these diseases.
