ABSTRACT

The word “functionalized” is sometimes used in polymer chemistry to denote chemically modified polymer different from the original by the presence of additional functional groups. Some authors also use the word “functionalized” for chemical changes in monomers. This dual definition creates confusion because from this point of view even usual PVC –(CH2CHCl)– can be referred to as “functionalized” polyethylene –(CH2-CH2)–. This is discussed below.
