ABSTRACT

Skin is the largest body organ, and it has an amazing regenerative capacity. It is our rst line of defense against environmental hazards that we are exposed to everyday such as ultraviolet radiation and pathogens. The long-term exposure to these hazards has been shown to often give rise to malignant lesions such as melanoma and basal cell carcinoma most commonly at 60-70 years of age in humans. In fact, basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of cancer in the American population with 1.8 million cases in the United States alone every year. Despite the prevalence of this disease, and the easy access to the skin, the clinician has no medical device capable of detecting this form of cancer on a routine basis.
