ABSTRACT

In order to better enable the verication of candidate biomarkers, biosensors which are capable of highly specic and sensitive detection directly from complex media are highly desirable [50]. To this

end, biosensing techniques have to resolve three major issues. First, due to the vast sea of proteins in human plasma (or serum), the platform must reduce or eliminate the presence of nonspecic protein adsorption (i.e., biofouling). Secondly, the surface must allow for efcient and convenient immobilization of molecular recognition elements (e.g., antibodies). Lastly, the biosensing method/device should be highly sensitive while allowing for the quantication of small levels of the desired specic interaction from complex media, preferably in real time, and with relatively simple detection protocols.
