ABSTRACT

Various imitation lumber are used as building materials. It is important to judge the degree of visual similarity between such materials, because building materials are often chosen on the basis of appearance. Therefore, a study was performed in which assessors were asked about the degree of visual similarity between various samples. We found that each type oflumber can be classified into two broad groups, one with a rectilinear grain and the other with a rounded grain. We used image features obtained from a sectional wave approach to predict the judgment of similarity between pieces oflumber with reasonably good results.
