ABSTRACT

The multiethnic population is one of the most rapidly growing demographic segments of North America. According to the 2000 United States Census, 29% of the population is non-Caucasian and by 2056, greater than 50% of the population in the United States will be of non-European descent.(1)

Beauty magazines and the fashion industry have helped us understand the evolution of beauty in our society. In the 1970s Caucasian men and women mostly dominated fashion runways, but today, these runways are shared with faces of individuals of multiethnic backgrounds. It is to no surprise that the face of the aesthetic patient is also changing. As surgeons, no longer are we only addressing patients from different ethnic backgrounds, but more importantly, patients, who share a mixture of different ethnic traits. Diversity of the ethnic traits can be seen through the ever-increasing melting pot in our society, which results from diversity within ethnic groups, industrialization, and migration and interethnic marriages.
