UNDERSTANDING TCP/IP

Figure  3.1 illustrates the major components of the TCP/IP protocol suite and their relationship to the International Standards Organization (ISO) Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model. In examining Figure  3.1, note that the TCP/IP protocol suite does not specify a physical layer, nor does it specify a data-link layer. Instead, the protocol suite uses its Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) as a mechanism to enable the protocol suite to operate above any data-link layer that is capable of transporting and responding to ARP messages. is enables the TCP/IP protocol suite to interoperate with Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and Token-Ring local area networks.
