ABSTRACT

Leadership during project execution by far exceeds any other variable in determining the outcome of a project as far as schedule and budgets are concerned. As previously stated, “leadership is about creating an organizational environment that encourages worker creativity, innovation, proactivity, responsibility and excellence” (Lutchman 2008, p. 19). Leadership is about creating a compelling sense of direction for followers while motivating them to performance levels that will not occur in the absence of the leader. Indeed, Blanchard (2008), one of the premier experts on leadership, advised that there is no single best leadership style for leading any workforce. However, the powers of the principles of the situational leadership and transformational leadership behaviors working together during project execution cannot be underestimated in building loyalty and motivating workers to higher levels of performance.
