ABSTRACT

Warning and safety information can be provided in an attempt to modifY or encourage safe behavior with a given product or within a certain environment. Scientific investigations into the usc and design of such warnings have yielded a vast literature and research base. However, manufacturers, employers, and practitioners must also satisfy and comply with governmental regulations related to the presentation of safety information for products, environments, and tasks. The specific regulatory requirements as well as non-mandatory guidelines put forward by a number of governmental agencies are reviewed, compared, and contrasted. The correspondence among such agency positions and a scientific understanding of the presentation of safety information is discussed.
