ABSTRACT

Force Protection measures impose additional demands on convoy vehicle operators , potentially degrading vehicle control , reducing local area awareness, and impacting overall mission completion. Autonomous driving technologies provide one means of reducing the demands on convoy vehicle operators . The Convoy Active Safety Technologies (CAST) system is one such technology designed to reduce mobility demands on convoy vehicle operators and improve overall convoy performance. Through a series of experiments and demonstrations, the CAST system has demonstrated its usefulness in augmenting convoy driving and allowing the vehicle operator to allocate more attention to local area security tasks. This paper outlines

the CAST systcm' s performance for two experiments, highlighting the importance of addressing human factors concerns to achicve optimal performance .
