ABSTRACT

With the development and maturity of network technology and web map is change that the human use map. Through the computer can update the map infonnation and display of suitable for human use. Nonetheless, the way a input from previous mouse into a touch-screen. The input device is changed, but the operating interface is still adopting previously operating interface. The purpose of this study is exploring the now widely way-finding tools - web map that user interface in the mouse and touch screen (Direct-Touch) to study better functions and interfaces of the Web map and to facilitate it usage. We collect and analyze the operating interfaces currently, and observe participants to operate the web map realistically. First, we through the world of famous search engines Google, Yahoo, etc. to collect 80 maps. After sifting carefully, we selected 8 representatives of web map that they can represent the type of web map operation function. Through the touch screen, 8 participants use the 8 maps performance actually. The result of operation: 1) when the fingertip press touch screen too much force or too less to effect touch and press accuracy of direction icon; 2) when the users who use right dominant hand across the screen, the right hand cover up sight line; 3) the back of middle finger, ring

finger, and little finger easy to touch screen automatically; 4) Cunentiy, sizes of direction icon of web map are too small to make the users operating troubled. According to the result of observation, the main of design not only resolve the area of fingertip too much but also improve the operating interface handing. As a result, we design Control Continuous-Enhanced Navigator. In the future, we will simulate testing on 4 different operating interfaces arc conducted in the touch screen: 1) Combined-panning buttons or CPB; 2) Distributed-panning buttons or DPB; 3) Control Continuous-Enhanced Navigator or CCEN; and 4) Grab & Drag. We hope the result that would provide useful reference for us to design the new interface that suits for touch screen to operation. In conclusion, the results of this study in its analysis, experiments, and design all could be useful references for further research and practical applications of thematic web maps, PDA, GPS, Smart phone.
