ABSTRACT

Various researches has focused on sleep loss and fatigue related risks in health care professionals such as doctors and nurses. Nursing, the profession of caring for the sick and the convalescent, the disabled and the helpless, is one of the noblest professions throughout the world. From the general ward to the operation theatre in the hospital, nursing is the most important component of patient care. Keeping all these points in mind, the study has being planned with the objectives like studying the medical history and hazards associated with nursing job. So, for this purpose 120 nurses from government and private hospitals of districts U. S. Nagar and Nainital in the Uttarakhand state were purposively selected. The results indicated that maximum of 40 per cent nurses were suffering from headache, whereas minimum of 17.50 per cent nurses were suffering from back pain. Regarding occurrence of chronic illness among nurses, it was revealed that anemia was

prevalent among 19.17 per cent nurses and least common was thyroid problem (2.50 per cent). The results regarding hazards as experienced by nurses revealed that maj ority (94.17 per cent each) of the nurses were encountering problem with repetitive motion and awkward posture during work schedule. Biological hazards like skin infection were reported by about 34.17 per cent. Most of the nurses (40.83 per cent each) got injured with solvents and dust and about. 60 per eent felt noise hazards, radiation, heat and cold (30.83 per cent each).
