ABSTRACT

Current demographic projections clearly indicate that the global ageing process is well under way and the world population will soon be faced with all its consequences. A recent report by DESA (UN Department of Economic and Social

Affairs) prcscnts an overvIew of the projected changcs in the cntire human population over the next 40 years. According to the report, by 2050, the global population will have grown from 6,7 to 9,3 billion. By this time, the over-60s age group will number more than 2 billion and for the first time in history the elderly population will surpass the population of young children. The great majority of elderly people will be living in Asia and Europe (Papicrnik, 2007).
