ABSTRACT

Dengue viruses cause classic dengue fever, an acute nonspecific febrile illness, and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) [1]. The principal mosquito vector for dengue, Aedes aegypti, infests much of the tropics and subtropics. Unchecked expansion of vector mosquitoes over the past three decades has resulted in explosive spread of dengue viruses [2]. Dengue fever is consequently the most common arthropod-borne viral infection of humans, with over 50 million cases annually [3]. In some regions, such as the in Caribbean and South America, dengue fever has reappeared after an absence of several decades [4]. Of newer and greater concern is increasing incidence of DHF in areas where multiple dengue viruses circulate simultaneously or in sequence [5].
