ABSTRACT

Given its climatic features and long history, the Iberian Peninsula and, in particular, the Mediterranean coast and the Ebro, Duero, Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys, illustrate how irrigation techniques have evolved over the last 3000 years (Al-Mudayana, 1991, López-Gálvez and Losada, 1998). Azudes (dikes), norias (water wheels), albercas (small reservoirs) and acequias (irrigation channels), are good examples of the numerous constructions and installations that have characterised irrigation systems and irrigation water use up until the last century.
