ABSTRACT

Fluvial hydraulics generally focuses on subcritical flow. Indeed, this regime, which is often identified as the fluvial regime, prevails in most of the alluvial rivers, during most of the time.

However, the most drastic alterations in river morphology happen during floods and are thus associated with sudden changes in discharge and water level. Moreover, intense erosion and deposition may disrupt the river features forming a sequence of breaks in bottom slope. Regime discontinuities may appear, such as hydraulic jumps and control sections.
