The results herein obtained provide useful indications on the seismic capacity of the masonry walls.

2 WALL UNDER VERTICAL LOADS

As in to the case of a steel column under axial force, the resistance of a masonry wall under pure axial load depends on the slenderness λ, defined by the following relationship:

where: ho is the buckling length of the wall in the buckling plane considered; i is the radius of gyration of the cross section of the wall; β is a coefficient that depends on the type of restraint; h and s are the height and the thickness of the wall, respectively.
