ABSTRACT

Hair is believed to serve no current physiological function in humans, but it is of considerable appearance and social concern. Hair washing, grooming, styling, coloring, waving, and straightening are the focus of consideration attention requiring the dedication of considerable financial resources. Both men and women desire a full head of perfectly coifed hair complying with all the current fashion ideals. Hair is a nonverbal indication of our gender, health, style, and self-obsession. A great head of shiny long hair is synonymous with health, as hair is one of the first structures lost with illness or chemotherapy administration. A face full of dirty stringy hair may be the first indication of a disturbed youth. A woman who is constantly pulling, primping, and grooming her hair in front of every mirror may be the first indication of insecurity or emotional instability. Yes, hair says a lot about who we are and what we aspire to be.
