ABSTRACT

Cosmetics and skin care products can be used as adjuvants to traditional dermatologic care. Healthy skin is characterized by an intact skin barrier, which must be maintained after disease resolution. Moisturizers and cleansers can improve therapeutic outcomes in a wide range of dermatoses from eczema to atopic dermatitis to psoriasis to seborrheic dermatitis to acne. Further, the skin is impacted by the use of ancillary cosmetic treatments of the nails and hair. It is impossible to treat the entire dermatologic patient without understanding the basic care issues created by the use of over-the-counter (OTC) products. This book has provided the basic information needed to create a dermatologic armamentarium that expands traditional therapeutic considerations.
