It is a little over 40 years ago that the modern use of enzymes in the detergent industry started; and since then, production of enzymes has undergone a dramatic change. It has evolved from being a small, curious spin-off from the pharmaceutical or chemical industry to the present large volume,

ef cient production process. Production of enzymes is an industrial biotechnology in large scale, and it has pro ted from all the new technologies discovered during this period. The most important of these technologies has probably been the use of genetic engineering or recombinant technology, which allows constructions of very ef cient production strains that can produce the desired enzymes in high purity. The development has also been impelled by a considerable pressure from the detergent industry itself for getting better, more robust, and more cost-effective enzymes.
