ABSTRACT

Enzymes appeared on the laundry wash product market in the 1960s, in soaking powders first, in powder detergents quickly thereafter, to help remove proteinaceous stains. Different enzymes, which improve cleaning performance by degrading large complex molecules such as proteins, starches, and fats, are now available for detergents. The reaction products are more soluble in the washing liquor and are better removed by the surfactants. Enzymes also help to maintain whiteness and brightness and clarify colors by removing fuzz. They even improve fabric softness.
