ABSTRACT

The virtual desktop use case is a very different use case. It uses the same technologies, stores point-in-time snapshots, but these technologies are applied to solve a very different problem than the server point-in-time problem. With virtual desktops, all the usual other data management applies. The snapshot process will set a point-in-time snapshot that will remain unchanged, but the changes to data will be kept separately. Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) allows the best possible enforcement of strong passwords and frequent password change. VDI offers the best possible application space update or reconfiguration/reinstallation of application space. Because of these characteristics, VDI environments are typically not cluttered, like normal personal computer and laptops, with personal content and applications.
