ABSTRACT

For the record, keeping the fire extinguisher on the floor of any establishment would represent a code violation in most American cities. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) #10 requires that the bottom of the fire extinguisher be located at least 4 in. above the finished floor, and the top of the handle must be lower than 5 ft above the floor. Some towns require a specific height. Schaumburg, Illinois, for example, requires the top of the extinguisher’s handle to be set exactly 42 in. above the floor. Most fire departments like to see the extinguisher installed about waist-high, and higher if children are likely to be around.
