ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the key engineering issues which remain research foci and the additional human-centric challenges that must be surmounted for successful uptake of the technology. It focuses on several commercialization challenges that remain market barriers for Healthcare sensor networks (HSNs). HSNs have been applied to the younger population in a number of ways. The anticipated effect of the use of HSNs on adults is that they would provide greater access to healthcare and make significant progress towards realizing the goal of pervasive healthcare. Despite sharing many general aspects of traditional sensor networks, HSNs face new research challenges originating from the focus on human and network interaction. HSN technology potentially offers a multifunction solution which could be cost-effective in terms of alleviating the pressure on the global healthcare system and reducing medical costs. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
