ABSTRACT

Involuntary weight loss is a common consequence of advanced cancer. Cachexia is a paraneoplastic syndrome and a major cause of involuntary weight loss. Cancer cachexia is dešned by ongoing loss of skeletal muscle mass, a negative protein and energy balance, driven by reduced food intake and abnormal metabolism (Blum et al. 2010). In cancer cachexia not only weight declines, but also physical function. Cancer cachexia affects patients and their loved ones.
