ABSTRACT

I. OVERVIEW: WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS? Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by patchy areas of demyelination within the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves but excludes the peripheral nervous system (1). The demyelinated lesions, typically located around postcapillary venules of the myelin-rich CNS white matter, are characterized by perivascular cuffing of inflammatory cells which then infiltrate into the surrounding tissue (Fig. 1).
