Thevarioustypesofsludgearisingfromwatertreatmentprocessesare consideredandthisisfollowedbyaconsiderationofdisposalmethods.The methodsofwatertreatmentplantoperationaimedatproducingthe minimumvolumeofsludgeforsubsequenttreatmentarethendiscussed.The dewateringofsludgeisconsideredastwoseparateprocesses:initial thickeningorincreaseinconcentrationtominimisethesizeoftreatment equipmentrequiredfollowedbyareviewofthevariousmethodsavailablefor furtherdewatering.Recentlyintroducedwatertreatmentprocessesarethen consideredwithparticularreferencetotheirimpactonsludgetreatment. Quantitiesofsludgearisingandoperationalproceduresforsludgetreatment installationsarethendealtwith.
