SUMMARY

Developmentsinwaterfiltrationhaveenabledamoreefficientuseofthe processandhaveprovidedabetterunderstandingofthemechanisms involved.Goodfiltratequalitycanbeachievedathigherloadingsthanwould havebeenconsideredpossiblesomeyearsagoandtheadventofdualand multimediabedshasbroughteconomicbenefits.Aconsequenceofmore effectiveuseofbedcapacityisthattheprocessismorelikelytobeinfluenced bythenatureofthesuspendedsolidsinthefeed.Aconsequenceofobtaining deeperpenetrationofsuspendedmatterintoafilterbedistheneedtoensure adequatecleaningarrangements.Thecomplexityofthefiltrationprocessis suchthatmathematicalmodelscannotasyetprovideauniversalsolutionfor anysituationbuttheirexistenceisofvalueinhelpingtodevelopmore efficientfiltrationplants.
