Ideallyaconcretestructureshouldbecastmonolithically (inonepiece)andreinforcedconcreteisdesignedinsucha waythat,althoughconcretestructuresworkasthough madeinonepiece,theymay,infact,becastinmany sections.Thesectionsinwhichthestructureiscastare knownasliftsandbays.Aliftofconcreteisthesectionof concretebetweentwohorizontaljointsintheheightofthe structureasinawall,beamandhopperconstruction.A bayofconcreteisthatsectionbetweentwoverticaljoints inthelengthofthestructureasinwallandfloor construction.
