ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION The arch has been used by engineers and architects in buildings and bridges for thousands of years. Its perennial appeal lies not only with its structural efficiency but also with its aesthetic appeal. The first arches and vaults were built using sundried mud bricks in mud mortar by the masons of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia^1). These were probably a development of vaulted reed structures depicted in early Egyptian drawings.
