ABSTRACT

The ulnar club hand is a longitudinal deficiency of the postaxial border of the upper limb with abnormalities of the elbow, forearm, wrist and hand. The anomalies at each of these sites contribute to the overall disability. The condition is several times rarer than radial club hand. There are several classifications of ulnar club hand have been suggested; none of them is watertight and not every case falls into one of these classifications. The hand anomalies seen in ulnar club hand vary and they do not correlate to the severity of the forearm deformity. The hand anomalies include absent fingers (ectrodactyly) and syndactyly. The standard techniques of syndactyly release, first web space release and surgery on the hypoplastic thumb (General principles of management of decreased mobility in children) may be performed to improve function of the hand in children with any form of ulnar club hand.
