ABSTRACT
Bolted flanged joints are a very simple mechanical component used in many applications. In this context a bolted flange is a pressure vessel and piping component.
Most pressurized vessels or piping components fail by excessive stress. Although flanges can also fail this way, failure is usually defined as leakage. Leakage usually occurs because of insufficient compressive stress on the gasket.
