ABSTRACT

Assumingequalloadcapacity,bolt-typeMJTscangenerallybeproducedwithasmallerfootprintthannut-typeMJTs.Mostbolt-typeMJTdesigns(Fig.5)havearingofjackboltsthat arealmosttouchingtheboltshank.Thismakesitpossibletoobtainpreloadsuptoyieldstrength intheminordiameterareaofhighstrengthboltshavinganoutsidediameterofthebolthead notlargerthan1tfztimesthenominalboltdiameter.Onsomeultrahighstrengthbolts(280,000 psiyieldstrength),theouterdiameteroftheboltheadmaybeupto1.7timesthenominal boltdiameter,asshowninFigure6.(Thisislessthantheover-the-cornerdimensionsofahex headcapscrew.)

Bolt-typeMJTsareusedwheretheboltheadmustfitintoacounterboreholeasshown inFigures7and8orwheretheboltsitsclosetoawallasshowninFigure9.Extremelyclose spacingevenatultrahighpreloadscanbeaccomplishedwithbolt-typeMJTs.
