ABSTRACT

Since the forces on the joint are equal and opposite to those on the bolts, it would be appropriate to call them negative and draw them below the deflection axis. For our purposes, however, we will find it more useful to ignore this sign convention and draw the forcedeflection curve for the joint as shown in Figure 1.
