What is the worst design practice for a structural element? Answer: Putting a notch into a smooth bar to produce a local stress concentration and then applying a high stress. But that is exactly how tensile fasteners are made and used. The threads provide a series of notches, and, once installed, the fastener is under a high tensile force with the state of stress further complicated by bending, shear, and mechanical constraint.
