ABSTRACT
The presence of a notch in a smooth bar, or a series of notches as with a bolt, requires additional consideration. It is generally accepted that if a notch is present in a smooth bar, the bar will break at a lower stress. But this is only true in brittle materials, which are then considered to be "notch-sensitive."
