ABSTRACT
The experimental apparatus is diagrammed in Figure 17. The bolted assembly consisted of parts 1-5, where 1 and 2 are the test bolt and nut. The nominal size and pitch of thread used were 12 X 1.75 mm. To eliminate the effect of friction on the nut base, a ball thrust bearing 3 was inserted between the nut and a compression cylinder 4. The threads were lubricated with machine oil for all tests. Strain gages 6 were attached to the compression cylinder and connected to a strain meter with wires 9.
