ABSTRACT

Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent and lethal cancers in the United States. While the incidence appears to have leveled off to approximately 70/100,000 in white men, it continues to rise in nonwhite men. A sharp rise in the incidence of lung cancer has occurred in women (6/100,000 in 1960 to 28/100,000 in 1987). The estimated overall incidence of lung cancer in the United States for 1998 is 171,000 cases.
