ABSTRACT
Models to analyze hierarchical data structures are known under a variety of names. In the social and behavioral sciences, they are often referred to as multilevel models, hierarchical (linear) models, random coefficient modelsand variance component models. In the biomedical sciences, mixed and random (effects) models are more common terms. In the remainder of this book the term multilevel model will be used.
