ABSTRACT

Thomas Linacre (1460–1524) was an English physician and scholar. He translated many of the works of the ancient Greek physicians, thereby making them accessible to a wide audience. He studied in Italy and then returned to England eager to spread learning that was flowering at the time of the Italian Renaissance. Respected as much as a scholar as a physician, he was appointed tutor to Arthur – Prince of Wales – the older brother of Henry VIII. He was subsequently appointed physician to Henry VIII, Cardinal Wolsey and other Tudor luminaries.
